University Of Kelaniya



History
        The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 by Ratmalane Sri Dharmaloka Thera as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks.

       With the establishment of modern universities in Sri Lanka in the 1940s and 1950s, the Vidyalankara Pirivena became the Vidyalankara University in 1959, later the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon in 1972, and, ultimately, the University of Kelaniya in 1978.

      The University of Kelaniya has pioneered a number of new developments in higher education. It was one of the first universities to begin teaching science in Sinhala and the first to restructure the traditional Arts Faculty into three faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Commerce and Management.

     It has several departments not generally found in the Sri Lankan University system and some Kelaniya innovations have been adopted subsequently by other universities. These include the Departments of Industrial Management and Microbiology in the Faculty of Science; Departments of Linguistics, Fine Arts, Modern Languages and Hindi in the Faculty of Humanities; and Mass Communication and Library and Information Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences


Coat of Arms

       coat arms The coat of arms of the University of Kelaniya is circular in design and consists of three concentric bands, the outermost of which contains the name of the University in Sinhala and English. The motto of the institution “Pannaya Parisujjhati” (self-purification is by insight) is a quotation from the Alavaka-sutta of the Samyutta Nikaya, given in Sinhala characters in the same band. The middle band containing a creeper design encloses the innermost, which shows a full blown lotus, signifying purity. These two designs are reminiscent of those occurring in the well-known moonstones at Anuradhapura.

Out Bound Training Program

Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) plays the most prominent role by imparting professional training for both Officers and Senior / Junior ratings in Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). The Academy is situated within the picturesque Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee. Trincomalee is considered as one of the best natural harbours in the world with rich history of maritime affiliation. This was an amazing training program that i faced.it was on trincomalee we did nice group activities to build our Team working skills. We spent two days in that naval base. They supplied us in advanced accommodations, foods and beverages us. Also they had arranged us good programs to enhance our leadership qualities. They grouped us into four groups.  Within the team works we understood what are the weaknesses of us in leadership, communication, time management and etc. As well they had organized us a fire camp and variety show. Barter Puzzle

This is also a one of funny activities of Personal Progress Development session.First We were divided into four teams. In each team has 7 or 8 people. All of us assign a team leader for each team. There were four different pictures in A3 size. As Miss Sarasi advised, team leader and another person came from each team for cutting that picture for 76 pieces. Ten of 76 parts were should be squares and others were should be any different shapes. We cut them as we like.Then Miss put each pictures’ pieces for each bag. But few of 76 pieces mixed with other pieces which were belongs to another picture. Then that bags were divided among four teams.  we arrange cuttings separately and join  the full picture in the mean time our group members trying to convince other group members and get some pieces we did 95% our puzzle but we don't have our cuttings because the other groups don't have an interest to give our cuttings so that any group didn't complete the task, so that madam
